Have you ever wanted to do something but were afraid of making mistakes? Have you ever made one? No one wants or likes to make them, but the truth is – they are inevitable and an important part of life.

Let’s start with a simple thought: people always make mistakes and always will. We just need to remember that a mistake is just a mistake, not an irreversible failure, not the end of anything, and by no means the end of your career. On the contrary – it’s your growth and a path to success. We can learn from mistakes and do things better in the future. Of course, only if we pay attention to them, change them and don’t make the same mistake over and over again.

In general, we are very afraid of making mistakes or simply avoiding them. We see all these successful people on social media who almost never write about their mistakes and bad times, but… Have you ever tried to ask them how they got to the point they are now? Or how many mistakes did they make before reaching this level of success?

“If you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You are doing things you have never done before, and more importantly, you are doing something.”

Neil Gaiman – English author of short fiction, novels and comic books.

3 reasons why you should make mistakes and why it is so important

1. They help us learn and expand our abilities.

Usually, we see mistakes only as problems, but if we look at them from a different perspective, they can open up new possibilities and open new horizons. Nothing helps you learn as quickly as making mistakes. If you only read information and don’t apply it, you don’t learn. Once you apply new knowledge, you learn. And sometimes you will be making mistakes. Just remember: that’s perfectly okay.

Mistakes are made because of a lack of knowledge or skills. They just happened because you didn’t know (yet) how to do it better. But when you have made a mistake, you know it better for the next time.

2. Mistakes make us stronger and more fearless

Mistakes keep us from sabotaging our careers and help us take more risks. They also help us to allow ourselves to try new things and evolve. Very often people do not leave their comfort zone because they are afraid of failure, in which case they cannot change and develop professionally and personally. The less afraid we are, the more we can do, which opens up many possibilities.

We tend to think of mistakes as something negative. Admitting that you have done something wrong and making an effort to change it – opens the way to grow and progress. Facing your fears can increase your resilience and courage, which are important leadership skills.

3. Boost our creativity

If one solution or approach fails – it is natural to seek another. So we have to think creatively to develop a new solution and find new ways of thinking.

What to do with our mistakes

One thing that is important: we must not only allow ourselves to make mistakes, but also know how to deal with them. You have to know how to correct problems and move forward. Let us share how you can do this:

  • Acknowledge and accept your mistake. Do not try to pretend that there is no mistake, it does not help anyone, it does not make the situation better, and you will make the same mistake again and again.

  • Take the responsibility. Do not put the blame on others and definitely do not try to hide it. This is very difficult for almost everyone, but this is how we grew up. In some situations, you can sincerely apologize. All courageous leaders can do this.

  • Understand the mistake. Ask yourself questions like: when and where did it happen? What exactly? And why? What should you do better in the future? It is very important not only to admit the existence of mistakes, but to understand all the details in order to avoid them in the future.

  • Fix it. When you know all the information about the mistake, you can correct it with your new knowledge. Use it to find a new solution.

  • Look at your results and find out if you have solved the problem completly or if there are still flaws in your solution. Ensure you have corrected it to your full satisfaction.

How to avoid mistakes

Of course, mistakes are often good for your development, but that doesn’t mean you have to make them on purpose. You still can take mesures to avoid them. These are a few simple tips that will help you make fewer mistakes:

  • Double-check everything, or ask someone else to do a check for you.
  • Draw consequences from your mistakes and think about how to avoid them in the future. You don’t want to make the same mistake over and over again.
  • Stay focused and try to avoid multitasking, it doesn’t help you being more productive.

To sum up

Human mistakes are a normal part of our lives that happen to all people every day, but also they are important for our growth. Usually, we think that they are something negative, and we are very upset when we have made them. But we can change our perspective by looking at them – they help us grow and improve. Great leaders know how to deal with these mistakes and how to use them for their advantage.

The fear of making mistakes hurts you much more than actually making those mistakes. We need to embrace them, view as important lessons to learn from, and use this opportunity to become a better version of ourselves. This approach is also crucial to improving your leadership skills. Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try and not to learn something new.
