SBB Company Profile Mission

What is SBB’s mission?

SBB’s purpose is to connect Switzerland — moving people and goods safely, reliably and sustainably across one of the busiest rail networks in Europe. As the national railway company, SBB operates passenger and freight services, manages rail infrastructure and integrates trains, buses, boats and urban transport into a seamless door-to-door mobility system. With around 35,000 employees and more than 1.39 million passengers carried every day, SBB combines operational excellence with continuous digitalisation and innovation to keep Switzerland moving.

What is SBB’s vision?

SBB aims to be the leading mobility service provider in Switzerland and an international benchmark, driven by high service quality, technological excellence and a strong customer focus. Its strategy centres on sustainability and digital transformation: SBB is increasing energy efficiency by 30% by 2030, expanding renewable energy production on its sites, and using data, AI and advanced technologies to improve safety, reliability and the passenger experience. Through initiatives like the “twofold shift” — from road to rail and within public transport from crowded to underused trains — SBB is shaping a more efficient and climate-friendly mobility system for the future.

Values

SBB’s culture and decisions are guided by a clear set of principles that emphasise responsibility, sustainability and people:

  • Safety and reliability: Ensuring safe operations for passengers, customers and employees at all times.

  • Sustainability: Acting as a pioneer of sustainable mobility with almost 100% renewable energy and ambitious climate targets.

  • Customer focus: Designing simple, efficient and well-connected mobility solutions that improve quality of life.

  • Integrity and responsibility: Respecting human rights, fostering a culture of integrity and encouraging open dialogue about concerns.

  • Inclusion and diversity: Building an inclusive corporate culture that promotes equal opportunities and leverages diversity across all dimensions.

Work Culture

SBB describes its culture as inclusive, diverse and performance-oriented, with a strong emphasis on safety, learning and collaboration. With around 35,000 employees in Switzerland, diversity across gender, backgrounds and roles is a fact of daily work — from stations and trains to control centres and IT teams. SBB has established employee networks for women, LGBTQI+, neurodiversity and equality, and created a “network of networks” to strengthen exchange and joint initiatives. Leadership development programmes such as the OneSBB peer-to-peer dialogues help managers translate values like respect and inclusion into everyday behaviour, supporting a more equitable and innovative workplace.
